fixed pricing is not innovative... it is common sense
There is a variety of retainers that we offer clients to suit their needs. Our pricing based upon price certainty. We work with our clients to establish the correct retainer structure for them.
Simply put, we price our work or we are retained under a set arrangement. That means that we do not charge by the hour. It's not that we hate hourly charging, it's quite the opposite - we love it. We love the fact that 99.9999999% of other firms charge by time or call themselves fixed fee firms but use time as the method to calculate their fee.
Our approach and non-reliance, non time charging, means that we focus on the outcome and deliverables, not time sheets and monthly time budgets. You will not be billed for that 2 minute phone call from us. There are no hidden charges such as the cost of a telephone call or that strange practice some firms have of charging you per page to receive a fax.
Our pricing structure is aligned to you and we tailor it on a case by case basis.
In some circumstances we have an engagement fee, some clients will retain us on a set monthly or quarterly retainer and we do the typical job by job basis engagement.

At the commencement of each matter you will receive a scoping schedule/quote. This gives a clear outline of both the scope and price for you to sign off on. Our quotes are not estimates, they are quotes.
Lawyers may charge by the hour, take as long as they want and be rewarded for it
retainers
We are retained by some clients on a fixed monthly or quarterly fee that is an amount at an appropriate level providing certainty for clients budgeting but also a level that provides and immediate reduction to the clients historical legal spend.
Some clients do find that time suits them but that is up to them.

"First Consultation Free"
Don't you love that phrase. Initial consultation are never 'free.' It takes up your 'time.' It is important but we don't bill you for it. It is how we are able to accurately price your work and gain more than a superficial overview. It will take more that 30 mins in most circumstances unless it's a 'simple' need. We use this meeting to ascertain the real nature of your issue or requirements. We will likely ask you to send us through some documents or even an email summary beforehand, so we can spend some time to prepare rather than wasting 'time' going through the material in front of you. So no, we don't bill you for this initial review, it's an important step so no ones' time' is wasted in the long run.
You can do it in person, by phone or Skype, and depending on where you are, we are happy to come to you.

COSTS PUBLICATIONS
Below is an except from the Queensland Law Society's "Guide to Cost Billing..." as it pertains to time recording and time billing. This is an official publication of the QLS and outlines issues with time based billing. You might identify see why we avoid it. The crux of our pricing structures are certainty and an alignment that works for both our clients and us.
Below we also have a few articles on our approach from The Australian newspaper in 2012, and industry publications, Lawyers Weekly in 2012, and Brisbane Legal in 2013.

We have ceased providing comment to press and industry on legal pricing. The debate on fixed fees, value pricing and hourly charging bores us. We aren't out to change our industry, just our client's world and we are happy for other firms to remain in the 1900's.
